EyeTV has a free service called My EyeTV which resolves the IP. You just need to register with your email address and a password, then within the EyeTV app on the iPhone you enter same and you can connect from anywhere.
If you want to opt out and not provide this information, you can get the OS X version of dyndns.org to manage a domain name that handles dynamic IP address changes.

Exactly. Its called being a kid. Luckily, you'll age out of it. Until then, suck it up and get used to it.
Exactly, you're a child, a minor, a non-voter, you have no adult rights and the reason you're still at school is to learn...
If your IT admin who understand the network, administer the network and have to fix all the problems caused by students that don't know much at all, then they are well within their right (as adults, teachers, professionals) to do what they ned to to protect the investment in their infrastructure.
Consider it a learning experience, these people know more than you.
I'm sure if you ask nicely they'll give it back.
I wasn't attempting to connect to the network, no harm was being done

Granted, there are PC's out there with 200 GB hard disks and DL DVD-burners for about $500. The difference between those and the Mini, is that one the Mini is mini (just look at a cheap PC box side by side with a mini), and the second is that the margins on the PC don't need to support as much infrastructure as Apple's do. Apple spends a lot on development which they can't really charge for except through hardware and the occassional OS and iLife release. Imagine if eMachines had the burden of developing Windows Vista--I imagine it would force them to raise their prices.
Having said that I do sometimes see Apple hobbling consumer hardware for the sake of differentiating it from the pro lines. Hopefully that will change as the Intel chips Apple uses grow in depth.

Sold... 299 dollars for that? Amazing.
That's my thought exactly. This is what I wanted FC to be all along. I found myself going back to iMovie time and time again because I was so sick of dealing with FC's quirks. This is going to make pro editing a pleasure.

Then again, iPhone 5 could still come out in the not too distant future and iPhone 4, black and now white versions could become the new $49 phones like the 3Gs is now.

I suppose I'm being too cynical, but part of me suspects that AT&T has only created this app to reduce the amount of time their reps spend listing to complaints about dropped calls. I know I've spent a lot of time on the phone with them over the last year. While they're always very cordial and say things like they are "sending out crews to look at towers", etc, nothing changes. In fact, where I live (about an hour south of NYC) things have gotten far worse - not better.
No, you are dead on. Long story, but relevant.
I live right in the middle of what is supposed to be top notch 3G voice and data coverage. Not only do I not have 3G service as indicated, but all phones owned by any ATT customer physically at my home routinely drop into GPRS data.
I called AT&T to inquire and pointed out that the closest fringe area was 3 miles or more in any one direction. This meant according to their own maps, I was in fact 3 miles deep into what was indicated as perfect 3G coverage.
So things were escalated after a few calls totaling several hours to another tier of support.
This gentleman told me I was looking at the voice coverage map, and that I should look at the data coverage map.
So, I looked at the 3G data map, and while the coverage geometry did differ from the voice, I was still 3 miles deep into what was indicated as perfect 3G coverage. Voice or Data.
At this point, they said they were sending an engineer out to take readings.
Knowing that it might be a simple tuning or positioning issue and that every GPS map company on earth reports the wrong position of my physical address by about 1000 ft, I gave them specific GPS coordinates for the address.
A common theme through all of this is that I was promised follow up calls, and never got a single one... I always had to call to follow up with them.
So I call back and get in touch with the tech, and he said the engineer came out and there was perfect 3G coverage.
Hmmm... maybe something is wrong with my phone... so I check the other 3 people who live in the household with 3G capable phones, all different models.
Same problem.
A buddy came over with a 3G phone know to work properly in 3G areas... same problem.
My phone at work in a 3G area, no problem.
I called ATT back with this information including the phone numbers of the other individuals experiencing the same issues at the location. They indicated they would send another truck out to take readings.
My gut feeling at this point was, the guy was at the GPS location 1000ft up the road, not my address.
So I asked them to have the guy give me a call and pull in my driveway to take readings, just to be sure he was at the correct location. They refused.
A few days go by and I contact them again, this time the tech tried to tell me there were no 3G towers in my area, nor would they be in the near future.
Interesting...
Finally the tech admits his maps don't match the coverage maps, and there seems to be coverage showing where he shows no towers for miles.
He contacts his supervisor finds his maps are incorrect. Go figure.
Eventually he transfers me to his supervisor who pretty much told me they have spent enough time on the issue and there was nothing they could do.
For the record, an acceptable solution to me would have been:
1) Correct the coverage map
2) Fix the issue
They chose to let me out of my contract on all lines rather than fix the issue or fix the coverage map.
This was 1 1/2 years ago, and the situation is the same today.
To me, this application seems like a diversion tactic.

I'd add that the Desktop Celerons are junk (especially when you can get the budget-priced Pentium D for something like $130).
But the Mobile ones are actually a fairly good chip at a fairly good price. So long as the rest of the configuration is acceptable.

I loved the first Portal and The Orange Box, but $50 for Portal 2 seems kind of steep to me.
I feel the same way. Just wait a while. There will be sales and It'll go down in price in time. Valve is good about this, unlike say Nintendo. I'll be getting it then myself.
It would probably be better if you never posted here again.
Just because you and I don't agree with him is no reason to be rude.

I would gladly subscribe to iPad magazines. As it is, I subscribe to the print versions of the New Yorker, Wired, New York Magazine, Esquire and GQ. If I could get all of these magazines for a reasonable price on the iPad, I would gladly make the switch, if only to get rid of the pile of magazines I'm left with every month (after reading them). However, for the $5/issue they're charging now, no way. Although, I should mention that New York Magazine gives free access to its print subscribers, which is fantastic.

I see the point, but there's a bit of a difference between something not being to your taste and telling the people who run the sites that they're geeks who don't know what constitutes a newsworthy site. :)
If I did complain I'd do it in a way that was at least civil, hehe.
Well, I hope the person who said that appreciates the irony in their statement. I dont know how ANYONE on MR isnt a GEEK. I wear that with total pride:) Stay well dude

And.. there's profanity in the Mac OS X Dictionary?
Pretty much all dictionaries have profanity, as I think they should. They're words too.
And... I wonder how much that would block.
(when I was little, if I heard a word I thought was "bad" I would look it up in the dictionary and see if it said vulgar next to it :o)

Even though it's only 10x disks (which would only allow for either a JBOD or RAID 0), consumer grade disks aren't the way to go for this much capacity used for primary storage. As the backup pool, consumer grade disks are fine due to the lower duty cycle (say 8 hrs per day on average).
It's cheap, but it's not going to be reliable enough for a primary pool. Enterprise grade 3TB disks aren't cheap ($350 per, which is more than double the 5400rpm consumer versions, not quite that much for the 7200rpm consumer units; all 3TB units).
Some might consider this splitting hairs, but I see it as a critical difference for the uptime requirement.
http://storagemojo.com/2007/02/20/everything-you-know-about-disks-is-wrong/
From what I've seen, there isn't much of a benefit to "enterprise" hard drives within the same family, that is to say a Consumer SATA 3 TB 7200 rpm vs a Enterprise SATA 3 TB 7200 rpm. Google's study shows they use "consumer" grade, and numerous studies have shown that there is no significant difference in failure rate.
I say save the money, spend it on a few more hot spares and you'll be better off; cheaper and safe. If moneys no object, or you know what firmware tweaks the Enterprise class drives have and whether or not they'll affect you, then this isn't your thread ;)
Also the common trend seems to indicate that MTBF/MTTF is pretty meaningless in the real world...
The OP indicated that he has a Mac Pro he can use, if thats the case then go DAS by all means, Linux will be a compromise...

True, it may not be the best to split out power from one rail. But you can easily put in two NVIDIA Quadro 4000 in a single system, which is a pro level graphics card.
