    1. (of language) Open to more than one interpretation; having a double meaning.
    2. Unclear or inexact because a choice between alternatives has not been made.

The problem may be confusing to some; it certainly is not ambiguous. There are rules in math, if you follow them, there is only one answer. Period.

    i agree and disagree!

I believe the problem stated was ambiguous since he/she did not express the equation with parentheses that would have helped to expound the problem in a more accurate manner!

The equation should of been expressed as: (48/2) x (9+3)

Mathematics do have rules, and thus will almost certainly yield one answer, this only holds true if there was clear presentation of the facts stated, rather than the reader making inferences from the initial question: which in this case was poorly numbered (worded)

They do know whom they're talking about right? I mean they say PC manufacturers yet palm are producing windows mobile pieces of junk. Windows mobile is the biggest piece of shite operating system - it would not be hard to come up with something a lot better (for Apple at least). And the Palm OS is very dear to my heart, but not exactly cutting edge and palm don't even own that anymore.

Palm are washed out, end of story.

Or what? You'll release the dogs? Or the bees? Or the dogs with bees in their mouth and when they bark they shoot bees at you?

ah nothing like starting the day with a bit of ignorance.

    +1 to some reality check.

This thread shows a lot of over simplification of how economies works and what is actually causing job loses.

More importantly, the MacBook Pro's hinge design limits how far the display can open.

Okay, that is one thing I will agree that they need to change. I'm pretty tall and I have noticed when I go to the Apple store that I could put the screen back a little futher than they allow me to. Well, I can only hope they make that change on August 7th.

And how did you go from that acquisition to "Google are running their datacenters on ARM" might I ask ?

Not to mention my article is 2 months old, yours is more than 1 year old. ;)

Nope, you'll have to retract your "facts". As far as we know, Google doesn't run their datacenters on ARM at all.

What I really wanted to say is that Google is going to run their datacentres on ARM and for some reason I wrote that they allready are which was a mistake. But the fact that Google bought a company developing ARM processors and also hired engineers from PA Semi that previously worked on Apple's A4 chips means that they ARE going to produce their own ARM chips either for their own Android phones or more likely for their datacentres.

I wonder if apple said, we have $60 billion dollars. We will buy every tablet you can make for the next 3 years. If you build new factories or production lines, we'll take those too, including those of your affIliate companies..

And then Apple will go on to buy up all the LED computer displays, hard drives, and Intel Processors.

The Computer Industry can KEEP their Blu-ray drives...

Still downloading (10 more hours to go)...

Those who experienced non-quitting iCal in DP1, can you quit it in DP2?
Also, can the Launchpad icon be dragged out of the dock?

Please, say 'yes' to the above 2 questions. :o

Maybe not at WWDC, but I don't see them waiting till Fall to put out new iPhone hardware, hold iOS5 till then, maybe, but not new hardware.

They risk losing people to Android, WebOS, etc... as the remaining iPhone3GS people all start coming off of contract, and nobody will go iPhone4 knowing 5 is just months away.

This waiting around also gives 3GS users a few months to check out other products (new Pre w/WebOS, etc). Apple does not want people looking around during that break time.

depends how many people are eligible to upgrade

last year AT&T opened the floodgates on early upgrades and locked a lot of people in who wouldn't have been eligible until later in the year

apple knows how many people are eligible so it doesn't make sense to release a phone with a smaller eligible customer base. i bet apple and AT&T will work out another financial arrangement to allow early upgrades starting in september or so

10 hours? Luxury. I dream of being able to download 2GB in 10 hours.

It'll take me over 4 days.

Hrumpf... When I was a lad, we used to have to chisel the ones and zeros into a stone tablet with our fingernails, carry them to and from the server 5 miles through a snowstorm (uphill, both ways), only to have our father delete them, kill us outright, and dance about on our graves singin' hallelujah!

    Cheers

You are crazy. If anything, this might indicate that iPhone 5 will be delayed for a year or two. Apple will have to build it's own factories for LCD panels, RAM and flash memory chips.

    If they keep using Samsung...

I'm suggesting they may not be.

No, they are doing it to make installations easier. You can already install Lion on Hackintoshes.

What was hard about previous installations ? Pop CD in, run upgrade. Same process.

You didn't have to boot off the SL CD to install it, you could start the upgrade process from Leopard just fine.

With Thunderbolt I/O and so much stuff coming standard on the motherboard, you no longer need so much room for internal expansion. So it makes sense that Apple would take this opportunity to shrink the Mac Pro form factor. Those few who need a slew of high speed drives will be able to connect to some external RAID box, and a smaller case should still be able to house all of the expansion cards required by 99% of Mac users. (With Thunderbolt, you could use an external cage to house expansion cards as well, if you needed a slew of 'em for some reason.)

I hope this is true because I'd like to replace my going-on 4 year-old PC with a Mac Pro at some point, but the current case just won't fit in the IKEA wardrobe I'm using as a workstation. It sounds like this new Mac Pro would be smaller than my existing PC. Yea Apple!

At http://openforum.sophos.com/t5/Sophos-Anti-Virus-for-Mac-Home/Disabling-Sophos-from-start-up/m-p/1117#M643 in the words of a VIP:

Sophos Mac HE wasn't built to be used for on-demand scans only - it will use more resources than necessary for just this task

    ----

slowing my Mac to a crawl

    Experiences do vary greatly.

At one extreme: users who find SAV better than comparable software from other developers. There are many such users.

At the other extreme: users who find that SAV causes deadlock (requiring a forced shutdown or restart) before the computer can be used. Around http://openforum.sophos.com/t5/Sophos-Anti-Virus-for-Mac-Home/Unable-to-complete-login-after-reboot/m-p/1005#M588 I hope to discover whether a previously known issue was:

    a) resolved appropriately (if the number of WorkerThreads was not increased from 4, then how was the issue resolved?)

    or

    b) overlooked.

Somewhere in the middle: Second and subsequent launches of applications, a sense of hogging (http://openforum.sophos.com/t5/Sophos-Anti-Virus-for-Mac-Home/Second-and-subsequent-launches-of-applications-a-sense-of/td-p/355) by default, on-access scanning excludes archives and compressed files (IMO that's not ideal); if you do prefer on-access scanning of archives and compressed files you may find that some types of application are unusually slow to launch.

Reading File Vault Information The Matrix Data Bank (http://www.schollnick.net/wordpress/macintosh-related/file-vault-information) (highlights (http://diigo.com/0drrs))

each additional thread will take up approx 8Mb of memory

alongside http://openforum.sophos.com/t5/Sophos-Anti-Virus-for-Mac-Home/Unable-to-complete-login-after-reboot/m-p/981#M576 my gut feeling at the moment is that a debatably small memory footprint (4 WorkerThreads, with no GUI to increase the number to a safer 15) presents unnecessary risk to some users.

Personally, I'm disappointed that a respected organisation with expertise in security (Sophos) has not taken care to have their product work reliably, for all users, with a key security feature (FileVault) of an operating system. It may be that only a handful of users are affected, but deadlocks and forced shutdowns are never acceptable.

Security is vaguely to mildly inconvenient, and worth it in my opinion.

    +1

For some types of user, software such as Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X does offer additional (never total) peace of mind.

My advice: try it. If you find a problem, feedback to Sophos.

So uh what exactly would Toyota lose if they tell Apple to stick it? At best all I can guess are licenses to use use an iPod trademark or something similar to integrate into the car stereo, if they even have that option. I can't think of anything else.

Hundreds of millions of iPods have been sold, and people want to be able to control them through their cars' audio systems. Toyota knows the importance of this by the number of people who go into their showrooms and ask if their cars have this feature. I think it is really quite important and may be a deciding feature for people who are comparing cars of different brands, which are otherwise quite similar. Toyota is making a good business decision.

And how would Microsoft go about "leveraging the desktop"? People throw out computers and buy an iPad. People don't say "well, I have a Windows PC, I will buy a Microsoft tablet to go with it". They say "well, I have a Windows PC, I will buy an iPad so I can get rid of that old PC".

You ask a very good question iin that first sentence. MS must have wrestled with that very same question and came up with the horrible solution carefully reiterated in the following wordy advertising (http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/buy/featured/asus/default.aspx?CMXID=2120.win7_75299592-4B77-4AD0-853B-DCCAD1A1CAB3&WT.srch=1).

The Windows tablet/slate expects everyone to keep their PC nearby in order to enjoy the utility of their slablet. There is also an awful short video advertisement on YouTube for the Asus slablet.

All I can say is Apple better be coming out with a mid-range tower. Upping the baseline of the MacPro to $2500, what is that. Sure it looks like a sweet computer, but what about small businesses or starving artists who cant afford that. Now we're stuck with the all-in-ones.
