I will be buying the next iPhone no matter what it is. My 3GS is getting a little long in the tooth. I am sure Apple will provide something great and the new iOS 5 will rock. My guess is there will be larger screen in a similar form factor, though it will likely be thinner and not have a glass back.

Once again, the seperating into 'smartphone' and 'tablet' markets makes little sense.

As the capabilities of both devices grow we'll soon find that the only difference between the two is screen size.

Do we consider the 13" Macbook to be in a different market than the 15" Macbook Pro? No, they're both laptops.

And thus, everyone will soon wake up and realize that ALL iOS devices should be compared against ALL Android devices. These 'smartphone only' lists may still make sense in but in 2 or 3 years these kind of measurements will be seen as worthless.

    I feel for you, lass.

Thanks, I need all the help I can get.

nothin' a good meaty soup can't fix.
when properly prepared, goblin taste just like chicken.

Excellent, walking around this mansion is making me hungry. And before my darling husband asks..no I'm not cooking the soup. You boys figure it out.

so once these are released, what are the chances if my MBP was broken Apple Care would replace it with a new Core 2 Duo one?

Why not have everyone leave this dead end?

Everyone will but we can get back to the starting room quicker using "Don't Panic's" plan of having you in a separate group.

... with a 70% chance that at least one of the other Mac models could see a speed bump with use of the recently released Core 2 Duo processor...

Does he speculate there is a 100% chance that a current mac model will see a speed increase with a 70% chance that another model will see an increase as well, or that there is a 70% chance that one current model will see an increase with some unknown chance of another seeing an increase as well?

This could have been worded better.

Maybe we can get the military to invade it. ;)

Merom isn't just bragging rights you should check out the comparison in the link that somebody provided. It's about 10% faster for the same price and power consumption. And the next generation of Front Row might take advtange of the 64-bitness.

Also, I plan on booting Vista with it also, which has a 64-bit version if/when it comes out next year.

well, i know there was some marginal increase in processing speed but i'm talking about actually running 64bit programs. i thought you need alot more horsepower to run 64bit programs than whats currently offered... maybe i was just tired and totally misread an article a couple of weeks ago.

MobileMe may be revamped, but the price will be higher - just to match Apple's image.

Just like how the iPad's price is sky high?

Steve Jobs was quoted as saying recently that everytime they've priced for volume (i.e., priced low in the hopes of greater sales) they've seen success. When they haven't priced for volume, their success has been more attenuated. Now this was regarding media and the iTunes store, but there's no reason cloud services couldn't be the same, particularly given how competitive this sphere will be and the fact that there's no real marketing benefit to "premium" data pricing (as opposed to premium laptop/notebook pricing where higher prices can contribute to a perception of higher quality).

I've heard similar rumors about MobileMe going free. Makes sense if Apple could leverage the new iAd system to generate targeted campaigns, and effectively subsidise the cost of opening the system up to more users.

Free MobileMe as an iAd platform? That sounds about right. Paid MobileMe without the iAds? I think we're getting somewhere now...

Sounds like a virus in itself. A pointless piece of software which just hogs your RAM. Totally useless for Mac OS X.

Gee, there is nothing like sending files with virus to your PC using friends or clients. Hey, there is our awesome showreel, presentation and virus to boot. That should leave lasting impression. When the Mac OS X is hit with first major virus infection I rather be safe then sorry. Regarding use of RAM, what are you talking about? This software has extremely small footprint and only time you see it using cycles is when you start manual scan.

Very true but those Macs are portables, not iMacs and certainly not the overpriced and overpowered Xeon server driven Mac Pro's that replaced the affordable and (at the time) upgradeable G4's and G5's we all used for our work. What happened to the dedicated 20/23/30" LCD CCFL Apple Cinema Display line, or even the Apple Studio Display line before them? Replaced with ONE 27" LED LCD based off the 27" iMac (basically an iMac without a computer). Times change, I get it, but why do they have to leave us power users who supported them before the iPod and need Apple systems for work behind? It's costing us thousands to switch to Windows systems and applications such as Avid and Premiere Pro/Adobe Suites.

IDevices are amazing, but please, don't make the already dwindling prosumers systems become iOS systems for the average Joe. There are a lot of people on here that are new comers from Apple's iPod/iPhone influx that don't know/understand what this is doing to those who really need OS X and affordable mid-towers and top notch displays again and once built in California, now "designed" in California. Man, sad times for us and the states on that change...

pretty much the vast majority of electronic products are designed in the westernized world and manufactured in some third world country. Fortunate or unfortunate that's the reality.

10 hours? Luxury. I dream of being able to download 2GB in 10 hours.

It'll take me over 4 days.

You have it easy. When I was a kid, in order to download a movie, we had to push two wheelbarrows full of blank paper six miles through the snow to the movie company's headquarters where we had to type the binary codes for the movie file out on a broken typewriter, cart it all home and retype it into the computer which would take 6-8 weeks during which we were allowed no sleep and no bathrooms breaks and only a plate of crusty, stale bread and a glass of filthy water. And when we were done, our dad would beat us around the head and the neck with a rusty railspike... if we were lucky.

(Sorry, couldn't resist carrying on with the Monty Python reference I saw starting up. :D )

If the next gen isn't released this summer, I'll probably be going with the bionic. I'd like an iPhone, but I'll need whatever I get in July, and there's no way I'm signing a 2 year contract with a phone that's already a year old.

And putting ARM as a secondary processor so that Macs can run iOS apps? There's absolutely no need...

Trying to graft an ARM processor into an Intel based system seems like a lot of added complexity. Apple doesn't like making things more complicated. Think of how simple and small the logic board is in the iPad.

A ton of design decisions... How do the ARM chip and Intel chip share memory? Do we instead give each separate memory pools? Communication between the two chips... at what cost to performance? Who gets control of the display at what times? I very seriously doubt that a hybrid system will transpire unless Apple has developed some "secret sauce" for dealing with this problem.

Do these two architectures even use memory in the same way?

I think a successful device would need

    1.2 GHz processor equivalent
    80 GB storage
    1 GB RAM
8 hours of battery life (5 playing an iTunes movie)
    estimated cost to consumer $699.

I bet that won't happen with that price range. It would be more close to $1500 to $2500 level. I don't think Apple is looking for low end markets with this rumored product.
I prefer Apple Tablet would be the low-volume high price products.

As a student I would LOVE to have a Mac tablet with a screen maybe a little bigger than an A4 sized piece of paper. It would be so helpful to be able to scribble notes down and I sure that Apple could come up with some fantastic and creative software for note taking and the like. It's exciting to think this could actually finally by happening sometime next year. Look for my MBP on ebay if this actually happens:):D

As long as I can upgrade at the lowest 2 year price (of course ;)) in June/July, a fall release
    wouldn't be that bad.
I voted negative but now that I think about it, this could be a good thing!
IF THEY release something truly "magical" in the Fall (use this time wisely if true).

A larger screen, faster (dual) processor and a new camera (not as dire), will get me by until the Fall.
    New notification system PLEASE!!! :apple:

Well a really fast computer at a reasonable price that you don't have to wait months for? I'm pinching myself before I make the call and order one. The idea that this could be what the original dual 2gig G5 that I (and a lot of other people) waited months for and really was kind of a ho-hum experience updating from a dual 800 quicksilver. Just playing around with a dual core iMac and being impressed says "this has got to be the one". The promise that they made for the G5 and didn't come across with. I would really like to play around with one of thses and say WOW!, not try to remember if it opened Photoshop faster than my quicksilver or not. 4 X 2.66Ghz Woodcrestoughta do it!

Pretty confident (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=11923858&postcount=88) there won't be an iPhone 5 this summer. The CDMA phone was just launched. It really doesn't make sense to stagger the releases (CDMA in winter, GSM in summer); it makes much more sense to unify the devices. We don't want fragmentation, do we? But no way in hell it's going to happen four months after the CDMA launch. This makes as much sense as launching an iPad 3 in the so-called "year of iPad 2".

MercuryNews.com (http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/columnists/16057579.htm) reports on comments by Palm's CEO Ed Colligan on the persistent rumors that Apple will be introducing a Apple phone in the near future.

Overall, Colligan was not concerned about Apple's possible entry into the smart-phone market.

"We've learned and struggled for a few years here figuring out how to make a decent phone,'' he said. "PC guys are not going to just figure this out. They're not going to just walk in.''

Colligan does theorize that Apple might offer their phone with Wifi technology and distribute the phone in Apple stores rather than through the traditional wireless carriers, such as Cingular or Verizon.

Apple has been rumored to have paired (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060926075521.shtml) with Cingular for their 2007 launch of the iPhone. Recent announcements, however, have cast some doubt (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/11/20061102152115.shtml) on this arrangement.
