He's just disagreeing with the notion that Apple somehow can't or won't make any adjustments when they start selling a radically different product through their app store. And common sense is on his side.

Nobody knows anything yet about how the release will work, nothing is announced. Is it really so unreasonable to wait until actual information exists before having a hissy fit?

Not to mention that it's a moot point anyway - if you're scared of the download version (regardless of the specifics), JUST BUY THE DVD.

i'm not disagreeing with anyone on anything. stop putting words in my mouth.

i'm saying that anyone who assumes that apple will make adjustments when they start selling a radically different product through their app store might want to wait until the adjustments are actually made. If you buy the digital download, and apple doesn't make adjustments, you'll be in a bad situation when you need to do a fresh install.

Like I said earlier... If they are released right away in the school year, the other students and staff would be in an uproar because they would say we should have seen this coming and blah blah blah, we should have waited until the start of the year.

Well you'll probably have to buy more in the fall anyways. I mean, have you ever seen public school textbooks?

I like to think of this like this:

You(apple) mow your lawn nice and neat and your heading inside when your neighbor(Toyota) starts mowing his lawn and the dead grass sprays on you nice lawn so you go and ask him if he would stop spraying grass on his lawn and as the neighbor are you going to no to him and continue spraying grass on his lawn probably not because then you(apple) and your neighbor(Toyota) then have hard feeling. You may sound like the bad guy but you don't want dead grass on your lawn. And if he did say no the his lawnmower(car) need some gas(iPod connectivity) your not going to want to give it to him.
I think of it like that

I am positive that Apple will bring a twist into the mobile telephony market, something revolutionary nobody could think that it will work.

And in 2 years from now everybody will state: Yes, Apple did it again.

I bet they do the following:

    - Follow the KISS (Keep it stupit simple) concept and build on there current iPOD success!

The new iPhone will be a WIFI iPOD with Skype (or something alike) build in. A high quality camera and Bluetooth Stereo Wireless will complete the hardware.
The software will allow "on the go" chat, blogging, videocasts, RSS and a mobile safari browser.

Strategy: Replace the need for an iPODs and provide the best personal communication tool

    - Eliminate traditional phone contracts with MobilePhone operators.

Apple will aquire "FON" and build the largest hotspot community in the world where every iPhone user can communicate for free.

Y'know as far fetched as some might say a lot of that is there's something that makes a lot of sense there too.

If so I'm not surprised Steve keeps seaying that he has something cool coming soon in interviews!

Ok then you do not know how to follow the order of operations....ie if you want 2, you have to have another set of parenthesis (so you evaluate it before dividing) or mistakenly think that multiplication somehow supersedes the use of division

Please go back and read my previous posts.

I honestly don't understand where some people get their logic from.
I just skimmed through this thread and i saw posts like "The next iPhone will be an iPhne 4S/iPad 2 type upgrade, so it won't be big". Or "the next iPhone should be called iPhone 4GS or iPhone 4S, because it won't be a big upgrade".
I'm sorry but a Dual Core processor itself makes it a huge upgrade. The iPhone 3GS was the biggest upgrade internally, the iPhone 4 has more RAM.

    Don't judge a book by it's cover.

Btw, why would Apple go back to messing up with their names? iPhone 3G was almost the exact same as the Original iPhone, except it had 3G functionalities. So they had to emphasize on "3G", hence the name.
In a marketing stance, it didn't make sense for Apple to go from iPhone 3G to iPhone 3, people want to see improvements not a removal of a letter.
And now finally they came back to the numerical way of naming the iPhone, and i think it'll stay just like that. It makes no sense for Apple to mess it up.
Otherwise the iPad 2 according to some people here should've been called "iPad 1S"

    This should make sense:
    iPhone = iPhone 1
    iPhone 3G = iPhone 2
    iPhone 3GS = iPhone 3
    iPhone 4 = iPhone 4
    iPhone 5 = iPhone 5

Makes sense? Now how messed up would this be..
    iPhone 4 = iPhone 4
    iPhone 4S = iPhone 5
    iPhone 5 = iPhone 6

In other words, don't undermine the iPhone 5. Due to the leak of the 'prototype' iPhone 4 last year, Apple has been very strict with their next device, by this time last year we knew a lot about the iPhone 4.
So we can only wait until a date closer to September (from what it seems), to see the actual features of the phone.
Keep in mind guys, Apple is going to add things to make current iPhone 4 owners upgrade, it's all marketing.

They don't have to do squat really. They can just call it the iPhone 5 and people would still buy it if it only had a slightly better camera in it.

We all remember the internal meeting Jobs held discussing how Google was in effect 'declaring war on Apple' by invading their "mobile" turf; what if this is Apple reciprocating. Offering similar options to Gmail for free and attempting to complement MobileMe with iAds in an attempt to unthrone Google. With the high hopes Apple has for iAds (as suggested by the rumors regarding the high developer pricing of iAds) it does make sense, and in the very least, try to hurt Google. Another intriguing question is: would Apple loyalists prefer Apple service over another as long as the quality is acceptable (perhaps even if the quality was less than the options, at first).

Apple has been doing this stuff since .mac so they've been on the turf for a while. iAds is not gonna be a part of the equation. Apple's building a huge datacenter in NC and with free Mobileme it gives developers a "no brainer" incentive to use Mobileme for their OTA sync. Wifi sync does nothing but irritate the user IMO.

This isn't about hurting Google this is about taking the next leap forward in computing by melding cloud services with mobile and desktop computing

Why not just make it a $20 product instead of giving it away for no profit?

Because Free always has better uptake as witnessed by the legions of people that let Google scrape their emails and other data to provide targeted ads. These people actually perceive this as being "Free" when in fact you're letting Google profit handsomely off your data.

There will not be a 4" screen on the next iPhone, so let us just cut that off right now. It is not necessary it is not better.

If you can have a bigger screen without a physically larger device size and weight, then yes, it is necessarily better.

I dont agree. A 4" screen would be larger real estate, but that would mean developers would have to rewrite their apps to fit the new size. For example, the iPad has an obviously larger screen space, which means that developers had to scale their software up to match, because lets face it, the 2x button just makes things look like pixels and thats just awful, this is not SNES system.
But the iPad has similar dimensions and screen ratio. But a 4" display would makes things look stretched, so developers would have to code each app to fit the new stretched screen. This would also be quite annoying on the app store, looking for apps which work on 3g, 3gs, i4 and i5 and iPad and iPad 2. It would just become a nuisance to download an app to see its stretched on older phones. this wouldn't be a good move by apple just yet. Apple like to care for older tech users, the 3g and 3gs users, and this larger screen would make apps not run as smoothly.

If those bringing up the Prada in comparison to the iPhone had actually used the Prada.... You really wouldn't be comparing it to the iPhone. It was a truly awful bit of technology.... If you could even call it that.

The article has nothing what so ever to do with honeycomb from what has already been written.

As for apple's history. My god some fud gets spread around these days.

Why do I have some weird feeling that they will update the entire product line at WWDC?Why not? Conroe will have availability by WWDC, IIRC, and Merom won't be far behind- they could announce a MBP with Merom, shipping in two weeks after WWDC.

MBP with Merom, iMac with Conroe, Mac Pro's with either Conroe and a Woodcrest quad or all Woodcrest, MacBook's with Merom or Yonah w/price drop, and Mac Mini price drop back to $499.This is the scenario I would love to see unfold including slowest 1.66 GHz Core 2 Duo in the $499 mini Combo. I think following this path would be the best way for Apple to gain significant market share this Fall. Be boldly state-of-the-art 64 bit all the way right away. :) :D  ;)

Just like "some PC guy's" named Apple didn't just waltz right in on sony's discman market ownership with a thing called the iPod. Apple isn't just some random "PC Company", they're innovative and they do intense study groups to determine what works and what doesn't with the majority of consumers.

I "Personally" always feel that there is one or two tweaks or features missing from an apple application. For example the ability to change which search engine to use in Safari, or the ability to change what map website the address book uses to pull up a mailing address in a map, the ability to burn a list of songs in iTunes without making a playlist, etc... BUT these lack of tweaks are actually what the consumers LOVE about apple's software. There are enough options to make it functional and not too many options to clutter the interface to scare away the consumer.

I still believe apple could burry options deep in preferences instead of just not have them at all, after all, no consumer goes through the preferences, only power users. But again, the power user isn't the majority of the consumers. So we'll see if apple can take over the phone market. I know I'd buy one.

    Farewell Wilmer, my friend.
you were sometimes a tad to excitable, and couldn't hold your ale, but i'll blame both on your folk and age.
but you were a good man and a good sword.
and rest sure, as your sacrifice made us all stronger.

    you will be missed.
    and you WILL be avenged.

    Goblins. bah!
it was unavoidable, weak as we were, that the first encounter with a monster would end up this way.
well, at least we didn't lose our magician here.
Entertainment is important to keep our spirits high.
By the way Rosius, couldn't you, i dunno, throw a rabbit at the goblin, or sommthing?

Anyways, the villain has used up 2 of his turns (one for collecting the point, one for summoning that despicable creature). he has two in hand, meaning that at most there is one trap somewhere or another goblin.
maybe he put that overgrown toad here to protect something of value?

R3T1. Let us search this room, then we'll discuss where to go next.

By adding the second set of (), you changed the equation, therefore the two different answers. As written in the original way, the answer 2 is clearly wrong.

I'm not saying that 2 is an incorrect answer, the equation is ambiguous. However, I assume the equation is written that way because it is done on a forum without formula writing ability and writing-

    48(9+3) = 288

    Easy. 13/48ths of an inch.;)

Is that wink a small admission of how silly your system really is? :) Sure, the math was simple, but how meaningful are all these crazy fractions? If I actually had to try and picture what these fractions represent, I'd want to convert the denominator into a multiple of 10 first in order to try and picture it. I might note that twice 48 is roughly 100, so I know we're dealing with a bit over 26%. Other fractions could prove more difficult. With the metric system, you never have to do this. You're always dealing with base-10, which is something we all understand and can picture, without having to memorise particular fractions and what they represent.

I really don't see much functional difference between a language and a system of measures. Both express specificity using prearranged syntax and values.

Well, we could certainly argue that international communication would be a LOT simpler if there was only one language and it would be! However, the reality is, we have a world with not only a diversity of language, but a diversity of culture, and the two are intricately linked. That makes the world a very interesting place, and being able to speak multiple languages would be a wonderful skill to have when travelling and engaging in other cultures. People are generally proud of their heritage, culture and language, and there aren't too many people suggesting the world should lose all of that richness in the interest of conformity. (Well, there are such people, but I think we can agree they're generally pretty scary.)

How many people are so nostalgic about the imperial system? With language, one communicates deep philosophical thoughts, writes beautiful poetry, tells a woman of his undying love. With a system of measurement, one well, measures stuff. Most of the world has seen the benefits of a better system and they've moved on without regret. What is different about the US that it can't do likewise? I honestly find it perplexing. Be honest now Is it because the French invented it?

Even beyond that, if we were to adopt the metric system 100% starting tomorrow, the transition would have to last for decades not only to encompass those who are too old to be educated, but also to deal with the infrastructure changes that would have to take place. At the very earliest it would be my grandchildren who would see a fully metricized US.

You're not stepping out onto the moon this time. Just about every other country on the planet (and there are quite a few of them!) have gone before you, and it worked out just fine. Sure, it takes some time, but not as long as you might like to imagine. Let me come back to my own experience I was born in the 70s, around the time Australia was just starting to transition to the metric system. The older folk may well have had a difficult time with it, but if so I was blissfully unaware of it. I came to learn what an inch was, since most rulers had inches on one side and mm/cm on the other, and people still, to this day, casually talk about their height in feet and the weight of newborn babies in pounds. (Yes, some old habits die hard.) But these sort of things are the exceptions. The transition to metric was so efficient, I, as a first generation growing up with it, didn't even notice there was a transition happening.

Seriously, you should be looking to Australia and other countries with successful transitions and learning from them, instead of just perpetuating all these fanciful stories of how terrible it's going to be to change.

If this is true and Apple decided to hold off until later in the year I'm expecting a big change for the iPhone 5. If it's going to be a 3G --->3Gs type of upgrade (same design/form facor, new internals) I don't see why they would not be ready this June.

finally someone reasonable! so many of you flippin fools don't realize what WWDC stands for...

    World wide DEVELOPER'S conference!

this is about professional stuff. in they launched the powermac g5, because developers could then write 64-bit apps. in they discussed tiger (and i think launched new pro displays) so that users could write stuff using core image and all the cool new tiger features. in they announced the transition to intel, because devs could now write stuff for the intel platform (and i don't think they really announced anything else AFAICR...). so in they are going to talk about leopard and how it relates to developers, and maybe release PROFESSIONAL products, like a mac pro or xserve.

you have got to be CRAZY to think that he's going to intro an ipod at WWDC, when MW Paris is right around the corner! MW Paris in september is pretty much ALWAYS when they intro ipods and consumer products this time of year.

edit: last year, they had a special media event around october to intro the imac g5 with isight and video ipod and did not have anything at MW Paris. this will probably be the same this year.

You are right if you follow the WWDC event history.
I am pretty sure just PRO stuff at WWDC.
Ipods, Iphone, Nanos, Etc. after that, maybe at special events or at Paris Expo.
So if you are not a Professional, I would not have your hopes too high for WWDC.

This question is primarily because I have a Macbook Air.

If Apple are going to release this via the App Store (assuming the speculation is true), does this mean that you don't have to burn Lion to a disk to install it? Or would I have to transfer it to some sort of USB drive first?

I guess I'm asking if you can just double click it in your downloads folder and run the OS installation from there

    ipedro
    May 4, 03:59 PM
I think this will be part of Apple's lower prices for OS's. Snow Leopard was only $29 because it was more of a maintenance update for Leopard than a full new OS. But how do they explain that to customers who bought Leopard and will be asked to pay 4X as much?

The fact that top selling MacBookAir doesn't have an optical drive, already implies that they will almost definitely sell a USB key with Lion so there's no reason to also sell it on a disc for the remaining Mac's who don't upgrade via the Mac App Store.

Mac App Store: $49 | USB Key $59

And Amazon thinks crippling ioS compatibility will be good business? FAIL.

I don't blame any company who looks at what Apple has done to people who are trying to create services for the iOS platform and decides that they don't want to go there.

They hold up Google Voice and other apps in endless app review purgatories, embarrassing the companies that spent valuable resources developing them. They look at companies that have created amazing magazine apps or streaming media apps, and now they say that they demand the opportunity to market subscriptions to those services and take a 30% cut.

Amazon looks at the situation and knows that Apple will very likely either hold up their app or demand a 30% cut of their subscription fees, and either case is unacceptable. This is especially likely to happen since this new Amazon service seems to compete directly with the cloud services that Apple is gearing up to offer.
